The Radio Revolution
The thing I love about radio is the inherent intimate relationship with the audience. It can feel like a conversation. You’re a part of something. Visuals can create walls; encouraging divisiveness and stereotypes. Radio is constantly breaking the fourth wall and encouraging connection. It’s an effective tool for engagement, understanding, and teaching. You can essentially broadcast your ideas by pressing a button, though there is a theatrical element in the orchestration of a radio show. You’re essentially the producer and the star at the same time; owning your own expression. I love the community of people who love radio. It attracts outcasts and artists. Real people form the strong community at KKSM.
I just had my last show of the semester yesterday. I feel blessed to have been welcomed into the studio by people who genuinely believed in me and trusted I had to something to contribute. I’ve come so far from my first shift on air. I remember being so nervous my mind would blank. “How can I come up with things to say?” Radio taught me I have things to say and to learn how to say them. I’m still learning, but I feel more confident. Now people ask me, “How do you know what to say?”
I don’t always know what to say, but I know I have a voice.
I’m looking forward to the summer semester. I’m always working towards making my show better; more engaging, interesting, and fun! The best part is there’s always a chance to grow and do better next week. There’s always an opportunity to try something new, to speak truth to power. I am a part of the radio revolution.
